Difference between Monel 400 & Monel 405

Monel 400 and Monel 405 are two closely related nickel-copper alloys with similar corrosion resistance properties. However, there are also some differences between them:

1. Composition:

Monel 400 is composed of about 67% nickel and 30% copper, and contains small amounts of other elements such as iron, manganese and silicon. On the other hand, Monel 405 has a slightly changed composition with the addition of a small amount (0.5-1.5%) of aluminum. This addition helps to improve the mechanical properties of the alloy and increase its strength. , etc.

2.Strength and hardness:

Due to the addition of aluminum, Monel 405 exhibits higher strength and hardness than Monel 400. This makes Monel 405 more suitable for applications requiring higher tensile strength and stiffness.

3. Weldability:

Compared with Monel 400, Monel 405 shows improved weldability. The addition of aluminum helps reduce the formation of intergranular carbides during welding, enhances the weldability of the alloy, and reduces the risk of weld cracks.

4. Application:

Due to its excellent corrosion resistance, especially in seawater environments, Monel 400 is widely used in various industries, including marine, chemical processing, oil and gas.  Monel 405 offers increased strength and weldability and is commonly used in applications such as pump shafts, fasteners and valve components.

5. Assign a special person:

Overall, while both Monel 400 and Monel 405 have excellent corrosion resistance, Monel 405 offers increased strength and weldability compared to Monel 400, making it a better choice for some applications.
